Propane Leak Found and Fixed on a Main Riser

A gas smell is never something to ignore. It's one of those things where you either deal with it right away or you roll the dice - and that's not a gamble worth taking. We got a call about a propane odor and traced it down to a leak on a main riser. The kind of issue that's easy to miss if you don't know what you're looking for.

Here's what made this one a bit more involved. The leak was underground at the riser - where the line comes up from below grade and transitions above ground to feed the home. That section takes a beating over time from soil movement, moisture, and general wear. The old riser showed the kind of corrosion and deterioration that happens when a fitting has been underground and under pressure for years.

We dug it out, pulled the damaged section, and ran new CSST line with a proper above-ground riser and shutoff valve at the wall. The new assembly is clean, correctly supported, and fitted with a brass ball valve so the gas supply can be isolated quickly if it ever needs to be. That's not just good workmanship - it's a safety feature that matters.

One thing we want homeowners to know: a gas odor and a tank that seems to empty faster than it should are both signs something is off. Either one is worth a call.
